Import Ban and its Uplift
An import ban imposed in 1989 by the United States on Indian mangoes, including the Alphonso, was lifted on April 27, 2007. Dr. Bhaskar Savani of Savani Farms played a significant role in uplifting the ban. (Learn more about it at: https://soundcloud.com/user-336591893). However, the mangoes needed to be treated before entering the country in order to stop the introduction of non-native fruit flies, destructive fungi, and other pests that could harm American agriculture. The first batch of 150 boxes of choicest Alphonso and Kesar mangoes in 18 years arrived in New York and was received by Bhaskar Savani, Arun Savani and Niranjan Savani of Savani Farms, importers and distributors of the fruit, at the JFK Airport, New York.
The USDA has specific regulations in place for the import of Indian mangoes, including Alphonso, into the U.S., arising from the risk of importing pests that could potentially harm American agriculture. As per USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), importation of fresh Indian mangoes is allowed if they meet standards for phytosanitary protection. Plus, the mangoes must be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate issued by the National Plant Protection Organization of India, certifying that the mangoes meet the standards set by APHIS.
